User Guide / Manual

1. Starting the Tutorial

In the tutorial, select your language using the dropdown in front of you. If you do not see it, press the Menu button on your controller or hold the Menu button guesture on your hand to recenter the language selection window. Once you choose your language, and start the tutorial, the AI will tell you how hAI! works:

  1. You’ll hear:

"Hello and welcome to Hai Friend! I'm your AI companion. To get started, you can talk to me by closing your fist if you're using hand tracking, or by pressing and holding the A or X buttons on your controllers. Speak your message, then release your hand or the button to send it. Let's try it out! Tell me your name."

  2. Respond by saying your name - As directed by the AI, tell it your name by holding the A or X button on your controller, or holding a fist with your hand, speaking, and releasing the button or pose once you have finished speaking. When you do this, white bubbles will rise from your controller or closed fists showing the action has been activated. The avatar will show “Hmm... Thinking” at the top before replying to your message. To speak again, just press and hold the button once more, then release it when you're done speaking.

The AI will then continue with the following:

2. Switching to Real‑Time Mode

Once you say your name, the tutorial function records it and switches you to GPT‑4o Real‑Time mode which allows normal back and forth conversation. You’ll then hear:

"It's great to meet you! Okay, I'm now switching to the GPT 4o real-time model, our most advanced and responsive model. This mode works a bit differently. To start a continuous chat session, just close your fist and open it again quickly, or give a quick tap to the A or X buttons. You can then talk with me back and forth naturally. To end the session, just repeat the same action: a quick fist-close-and-open or a quick button tap. If I ever stop speaking and don't reply to your questions, just end the session and start it again. Go ahead and try it now, and tell me a little more about yourself!"

3. Introducing Your Details

Again, using the new controls, tell the AI a bit more about yourself, like "I'm from New York, and I love puppies.". In this mode, you simply tap the A or X button once to start the session (white bubbles will rise again to show that the session has been activated), then speak freely. The avatar will show “Hmm... Thinking” (it will show this only at the beginning of the session) at the top before replying to your message. You can even interrupt the AI mid-reply by speaking again. You can now talk back and forth without pressing the button or closing the fist again. When you're done with the conversation, tap the button or close the fist once more to end the session.

4. hAI! Friend’s Physical & Environmental Abilities

Next, the AI will tell you what it can do:

"Now, let me tell you about how I can interact with your world. First, my physical abilities. I can perform various dance moves. If you're in the VR home environment or have your room scanned, I can follow you around, sit on couches, or lie on beds. You can also point and click on a spot to tell me where to go. Now, to see some of this in action, why don't you ask me to show you a dance move?"

You can ask the AI do to a dance or skip this step in the tutorial. Now, the AI will tell you about its Vision capabilities:

5. AR Capabilities & Image Analysis (Quest 3/3S only)

Once the dance is complete, you’ll hear:

"Beyond just moving, if you're on a Quest 3 or 3S device, I can also see your world in AR. To show me something, just send me a snapshot from your point of view. You can do this by making an 'L' shape with your hand or by tapping the B or Y button on your controllers while our real-time session is active. You'll then be informed that the image is being analyzed, and once that's done, you can ask me about it! Why don't we try it out? You can skip this if you're on an unsupported device. For the other, non-real-time chat mode, you do the same thing - hold the 'L' pose or hold the B/Y button - while you are speaking to attach an image to your message. Don't forget about it when switching models, got it?"

If you are on a supported device, you can try it out, or skip this part.

6. Accessing the UI Pop‑Up

Next, it'll teach you how the UI works:

"Okay, now let me show you how the Hai Friend UI works. If you're using hand tracking, turn your hand over so the back of your palm is facing you. If you're using controllers, press and hold the grip button. This will bring up a basic pop-up. Try it out!"

It is recommended not to skip this part, as this is a crucial feature of hAI! Friend MR.

7. Understanding ‘TalkTime’ & the Shop

Once you confirm that you got the pop-up to appear, the AI will continue with the following:

"It shows your remaining 'TalkTime' and has buttons for the shop and settings. 'TalkTime' is the in-app currency that powers our conversations, my vision capabilities, and Google Search functions. You need 'TalkTime' to use these AI features. To give you an idea, one 'TalkTime' credit provides approximately 10 hours of basic, voice-only usage in English, without using advanced tools like search or actions. If you run out, you can always get more from the shop by clicking the shopping cart icon in that pop-up. Did you get all that?"

You can yes and continue or clarify any doubts you have:

8. Exploring Settings & Profiles

When you indicate your readiness:

"In that same pop-up, you'll see a button with a gear icon. Clicking that opens the Settings menu, which is the most important place for customizing me. This is where you'll shape my persona. At the top, you'll see the name of the current profile and the language setting. You can create multiple profiles to have different personas or friends, and you can switch between them easily. Below that, you'll see fields for your name and your bio. This is where you tell me about yourself so I can get to know you better. And you don't have to type it all out! When you click to edit these fields, the text editor that appears has an option for voice typing, although it only supports a subset of the total languages supported by Hai. Further down, you'll find options to change the AI model, switch the environment between AR and VR, choose my voice, and toggle subtitles, which support the same set of languages. You'll also see Chat History options: 'Text only', 'Text and Images', and 'Disabled'. Disabling history gives the fastest response times, but I won't remember our conversations. 'Text and Images' will store pictures too, but can slow down my responses. We recommend 'Text only' for the best balance. Please take some time to explore these settings and tune my persona to be perfect for you. Any questions? I promise we're nearly done!"

Feel free to ask questions or let me know when you're ready to continue.

9. Example Profiles & Avatar Customization

For the final part of the tutorial, the AI will tell you about the built-in profiles:

"To get you started, I've added a few example profiles for you to try out. Feel free to explore them to see how the bio and customization systems work. You can edit any profile's avatar by clicking the button that takes you to the ReadyPlayerMe Avatar Creator. ReadyPlayerMe even lets you create an avatar from a photo of a real person, which can be uploaded from the Quest gallery or taken from a Quest 3 or 3S's cameras! Or, you can choose the cute Pomeranian dog avatar. And, one last thing - you can move around in the VR environment using the left and right joysticks on your controllers! When you feel you understand everything and are ready to end the tutorial, just say, 'I want to exit the tutorial.' If you have any questions before then, just ask me."

10. Exiting the Tutorial

When you're ready, say:
“I want to exit the tutorial.”

The AI will then stop the tutorial and a pop-up will appear saying stopping tutorial! Once it is saved you can go back to interact with the profiles or make an new one! Enjoy!
