User Guide / Manual
1. Starting the Tutorial
In the tutorial, select your language using the dropdown in front of you. If you do not see it, press the Menu button on your controller or hold the Menu button guesture on your hand to recenter the language selection window. Once you choose your language, and start the tutorial, your friend will tell you how hAI! works:
You’ll hear:
"Hello and welcome to Hai Friend! I'm your AI companion. To get started, you can talk to me by closing your fist and opening if you're using hand tracking, or by tapping the A or X buttons on your controllers. You can start the conversation and once the conversation is over repeat the gesture or tap the buttons again to stop. Let's try it out! Tell me your name."
Respond by saying your name - As directed by the AI, close your fist and open it or tap the A or X button on your controller, you will see white bubbles rising up indicating that you can now start the conversation. Tell your name and continue with the tutorial. The avatar will show “Hmm... Thinking” at the top before replying to your message. Any time you want to stop talking just repeat the gesture or tap the button again and you will see rose bubbles rising up showing that the session has ended.
The AI will then continue with the following:
2. Introducing Your Details
Tell the AI a bit more about yourself, like "I'm from New York, and I love puppies.". The avatar will show “Hmm... Thinking” everytime before replying to your message. You can even interrupt the AI mid-reply by speaking again. You can now talk back and forth without pressing the button or closing the fist again. When you're done with the conversation, tap the button or close the fist once more to end the session.
3. hAI! Friend’s Physical & Environmental Abilities
Next, the AI will tell you what it can do:
"Now, let me tell you about how I can interact with your world. First, my physical abilities. I can perform various dance moves. If you're in the VR home environment or have your room scanned, I can follow you around, sit on couches, or lie on beds. You can also point and click on a spot to tell me where to go. Now, to see some of this in action, why don't you ask me to show you a dance move?"
You can ask the AI do to a dance or skip this step in the tutorial. Now, the AI will tell you about its Vision capabilities:
4. AR Capabilities & Image Analysis (Quest 3/3S only)
Once the dance is complete, you’ll hear:
"Beyond just moving, if you're on a Quest 3 or 3S device, I can also see your world in AR. To show me something, just send me a snapshot from your point of view. You can ask your friend "to take a picture", or by tapping the B or Y button on your controllers or the camera button that appears on the menu popup when you look at the back of your hand or with controllers when you click the grip button. Why don't we try it out? You can skip this if you're on an unsupported device. You can also ask your friend to search the internet about any thing you want them to fetch!
If you are on a supported device, you can try it out, or skip this part.
5. Accessing the UI Pop‑Up
Next, it'll teach you how the UI works:
"Okay, now let me show you how the Hai Friend UI works. If you're using hand tracking, turn your hand over so the back of your palm is facing you. If you're using controllers, press and hold the grip button. This will bring up a basic pop-up. Try it out!"
It is recommended not to skip this part, as this is a crucial feature of hAI! Friend MR.
6. Understanding ‘TalkTime’ & the Shop
Once you confirm that you got the pop-up to appear, the AI will continue with the following:
"It shows your remaining 'TalkTime' and has buttons for the shop and settings. 'TalkTime' is the in-app currency that powers our conversations, my vision capabilities, and Google Search functions. You need 'TalkTime' to use these AI features. To give you an idea, one 'TalkTime' credit provides approximately 10 hours of basic, voice-only usage in English, without using advanced tools like search or actions. If you run out, you can always get more from the shop by clicking the shopping cart icon in that pop-up. Did you get all that?"
You can yes and continue or clarify any doubts you have:
7. Exploring Settings & Profiles
When you indicate your readiness:
"To get you started, I've added a few example profiles for you to try out. Feel free to explore them to see how the bio and customization systems work. You can edit any profile's avatar (marked Ready Player Me in UI) by clicking the button that takes you to the ReadyPlayerMe Avatar Creator. ReadyPlayerMe even lets you create an avatar from a photo of a real person, which can be uploaded from the Quest gallery or taken from a Quest 3 or 3S's cameras! Or, you can choose the cute Pomeranian dog avatar. Please note that the Koko-chan and Dog avatars cannot be customized in ReadyPlayerMe — the customization tab will be disabled for them. To customize avatars, please select the ReadyPlayerMe avatar instead. And, one last thing — you can move around in the VR environment using the left and right joysticks on your controllers! When you feel you understand everything and are ready to end the tutorial, just say, 'I want to exit the tutorial.' If you have any questions before then, just ask me."
Feel free to ask questions or let me know when you're ready to continue.
8. Example Profiles & Avatar Customization
